English Senior Open

The English Senior Open at Rockliffe Hall

Rockliffe Hall played host to the three-day English Senior Open tournament, attracting some of the best golfers from the European Senior Tour, including eight former Ryder Cup stars.

A new course record was set, the sun shone and the region’s golf fans arrived in droves to support the event that boasted names such as Barry Lane and Paul Way and local heroes Roger Roper (Rockliffe Hall), Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe) and John Harrison (Matfen Hall) alongside former Ryder Cup Captain Mark James.

Visitor numbers reached an all time high on Sunday, with thousands of golf fans through the gates over the three days, enjoying the luxury of our five-star resort as they witnessed Denmark’s Steen Tinning claim the title.

Tinning, who shot a course record 63 on Saturday, followed that up with a 67 on the final day (Sunday) to finish 17-under par, just one shot clear of Spain’s Santiago Luna. Tinning said: “This has been like a dream to win and now I hope I don’t wake up. It has been a great season for me.”

He added: “What a place to come and play. Ever since I arrived here at Rockliffe Hall, I have been greeted like a family member. The staff, the members, the volunteers and all these spectators have made me and all the players feel at home all week.

“When I showed up on Wednesday I felt this was as good as we have played all year. They have worked very hard to get this looking and playing as good as it was for this time of year.”

Michael Petch, tournament director for the European Senior Tour, praised Rockliffe Hall and its team: He said: “In a short space of time, Rockliffe Hall has prepared an excellent course and a stunning setting. The European Senior Tour is very happy to be back in the North East again and Rockliffe Hall is testament to the quality courses and excellent facilities in this region.
