Your five star home away from home, set alongside the River Tees, Rockliffe Hall offers the perfect location for an idyllic escape.

Rockliffe Hall is a five star luxury golf and spa hotel offering state-of-the-art spa treatments, the North East’s longest world-class golf course and a wide range of dining options. Rockliffe Hall is a memorable destination whether for a romantic break, special celebration, wedding day or business meeting.

Set in the quiet County Durham countryside, between the villages of Croft and Hurworth on Tees, Rockliffe’s location is perfect for discovering the treasures of Durham city, the drama of the North East coastline and the rugged beauty of the North Yorkshire moors.
Or, with world-class leisure facilities at your fingertips, you could just forget the outside world, treat Rockliffe as your home, and let us look after you. Windows overlook the golf course and the estate beyond dotted with rare and exotic trees collected by the Hall’s former owners and keen botanists, the Backhouse family.

Whether you want to relax or be active, celebrate or focus on business, we offer you the space, peace and privacy to do it your way. Our guests genuinely are ‘our guests'.

The History of Rockliffe Hall

Dating back to the 18th century, Rockliffe Hall is steeped in North Eastern history, with stories of its past owners and events offering a glittering insight into its past.

Original plans for the hall date back to 1774, but it wasn’t until after the turn of the century that the hall and the estate started taking shape.

Records from the 1820′s list it as being known as Pilmore House. Back then the Pilmore Estate belonged to local historian Robert Surtees of Redworth, and was habited – around 1836 – by his more famous cousin, landscape painter Thomas Surtees Raine.

The current site we now know as Rockliffe Hall came under the ownership of Alfred Backhouse and major developments began. The estate consisted of three separate buildings: the mansion house, Pilmore Farm and Hurworth Grange (to the west of the farm.

Soon after gaining ownership, Backhouse swiftly commissioned fellow Quaker, and relative by marriage, Alfred Waterhouse to rebuild and re-landscape much of the main building and the estate. It was during this period that Pilmore House first became recognised as the Rockliffe Hall Estate.

Lord Southampton bought the estate and lived there on and off until 1948. A keen cricketer and sportsman, he formed the Rockliffe Park Cricket Club and played on a pitch which still exists in the same site today.

The estate was bought by the Brothers of St John of God and converted into a hospital. Some 18 years later, it came under compulsory purchase by Durham County Council and used as a community centre.

Rockliffe Hall had a brush with stardom and parts of the grounds were used as the backdrop for some scenes from the Michael Caine hit ‘Get Carter’.

In 1903 and again in 1974, some of the buildings were badly damaged by fire.

After standing empty for several years Rockliffe Park was bought by Middlesbrough Football Club. Its new owners have since established a new centre for football training facilities that matches its desire to be a top Premiership outfit challenging for major honours.

The first greens were sown for the Rockliffe Hall championship golf course.

The resort opened its doors as a luxury hotel, golf and spa resort on 23rd November 2009.

Hole 1 Details

A well guarded opening green, with pot bunkers front and middle. Beware the water off to the right. A generous fairway allows you to open the shoulders for the first shot of the day.

Par: 4
Yards: 491

Hole 2 Details

Not the easiest Par 3 to hit and with an undulating green surrounded by bunkers, it’s certainly a test.

Par: 3
Yards: 205

Hole 3 Details

A tight tee shot with bunkers down the right, leave a daunting second shot to a well protected green.

Par: 5
Yards: 544

Hole 4 Details

Your tee shot must carry the water, but beware the bunkers beyond. Bunkers to the left and water to the right, protect the green.

Par: 4
Yards: 489

Hole 5 Details

A well struck tee shot is a must to this spectacular island green! Keep the ball below the hole and it gives you a great chance of a par.

Par: 3
Yards: 181

Hole 6 Details

A slight dog-leg to the right requires a well placed tee shot between two sets of bunkers, leaving you a mid iron to a generous green.

Par: 4
Yards: 449

Hole 7 Details

A long par five with the fairway well guarded from the tee. The generous layup area leads to a tricky green, protected by a single pot bunker.

Par: 5
Yards: 664

Hole 8 Details

Water and fairway bunkers narrow the landing area here. Laying up short of these bunkers still gives you a chance of attacking the pin.

Par: 4
Yards: 479

Hole 9 Details

A large uphill fairway leads to an elevated green. Beware of the severe slopes and bunkers, making this a particularly tricky green.

Par: 4
Yards: 466

Hole 10 Details

This hole is a long par four with the landing zone guarded on both sides by water. Bunkers protect the left of the green and a severe slope waits to gather all balls hit to the right.

Par: 4
Yards: 481

Hole 11 Details

Lay up short of the bunkers from the tee into the heart of the fairway. This leaves you a mid-range iron to the well protected green.

Par: 4
Yards: 503

Hole 12 Details

Accuracy off the tee is the key here. The green is well guarded by sand, but don’t be too cautious, as a severe bank is waiting to gather stray balls to left of the green.

Par: 3
Yards: 222

Hole 13 Details

An open tee shot but the fairway narrows the further you go. Bunkers heavily guard both your layup and approach to this tiered green.

Par: 5
Yards: 615

Hole 14 Details

A tee shot short of the fairway bunkers is ideal, leaving a mid-iron to this long green, surrounded by bunkers.

Par: 4
Yards: 425

Hole 15 Details

Water cuts in on your right, sand waiting on your left. The green is the only place to be on this hole.

Par: 3
Yards: 242

Hole 16 Details

A testing par 5 with a heavily guarded layup area. A solid second is required before your next shot to a tricky sloping green.

Par: 5
Yards: 618

Hole 17 Details

A wetland and large bunker set on both sides of the landing zone make this an interesting tee shot. Can you carry the bunkers to the left and shorten this hole?

Par: 4
Yards: 406

Hole 18 Details

Large trees force you to play right of this hole. The final green is guarded by bunkers and slopes waiting to devour any tired, final shots.

Par: 4
Yards: 399

Our Corporate Social Responsibility goals and policies include protecting the environment and community around us whilst looking after our own competitive interests and the interests of the wider society. Our corporate social responsibility statement demonstrates our commitment to implementing environmentally-friendly and socially responsible practices.

Statement of Corporate Social Responsibility

  1. We aim to protect the environment and community around us and those interests of the wider society.
  2. We encourage our customers to reduce their carbon footprint by providing facilities and products to help them do so.
  3. We ensure our staff are aware of our Corporate Social Responsibility policy and that they are aware of our impact on the environment and that they work in a responsible manner to uphold our policy.

Included below are some of our current practices to reduce our impact on the environment. These practises are reviewed and added to on a regular basis.

Recycling and Waste Management

  • The hotel works closely with Compass Waste Management on waste management, to maximise the recycling of waste materials and to ensure responsible disposal of other non-recyclable wastes. The majority of packaging waste arising from Rockliffe Hall’s retail operations is recycled including paper, cardboard, plastics and also used ink cartridges used in the shop.
  • Rockliffe Hall’s retail outlets including the spa boutique and golf professional shop make every attempt to ensure that the packaging associated with products sold to customers is recyclable.
  • When requested, recyclable paper bags are provided to customers for ease of handling purchases.
  • In the event that a customer would like Rockliffe Hall to dispose of the packaging materials, they can do so immediately at the time of purchase or return the materials to the Retail Shop during normal opening times at a later date.  Rockliffe Hall will be pleased to assist.
  • Customers are encouraged to check packaging for recycling information and to utilise local waste recycling facilities whenever possible.
  • The hotel recycles paper for in-house documents and only prints/photocopies in black and white for internal documents unless absolutely necessary.
  • The hotel recycles oil from the kitchens through a local contractor.
  • Our golf course features 12 miles of drainage and irrigation underneath the fairways and greens, it is sustainably managed through the 8 wetland areas in the grounds (taking water when the course is dry, and pumping out water when the course is wet).
  • The Golf Course also uses recycled rain water when additional water supplies for irrigation are required.

Further information on recycling and symbols can be found at www.toddpak.co.uk/recycling-information/.

Energy Saving

  • All of the lights in the back of house sections, WC’s and corridors are on PIR light sensors which reduces our impact on the environment.
  • Low energy lighting is used throughout the hotel to reduce energy emissions.
  • We use a CHP unit to help reduce utility costs and emissions and low energy lighting is installed throughout the hotel to help further reduce energy costs.
  • All lights and air conditioning are switched off when guests rooms, function rooms, restaurants and public areas are not in use and the doors are locked to ensure they remain off.
  • In the kitchens we focus on using fresh local and seasonal produce, which reduces the CO2 emissions in transporting produce a long way and growing produce outside of natural cycles.
  • We also try and avoid buying produce from abroad, to reduce our impact on the environment. We recently switched all of our olive oil use in the kitchens to rape seed oil which is sourced locally.

Local Environment

  • During the planning and development process involved with the construction of Rockliffe Hall, designs were specifically chosen that had a minimal impact on the surrounding environment (to protect the beautiful trees in our grounds), in addition to the 35,000 new trees that have been planted over the past 2 years.
  • The wetland areas around our 375 acre site also provide a natural habitat to swans, moorhens, heron and otters. In addition to this we have a lot of squirrels in the grounds, and to enhance their living environment we have built natural ropes and feeding stations to link between the trees to make their habitat larger.
  • We encourage our guests to enjoy our 375 acres of fresh air, and have resort maps featuring a range of easy to follow walking and jogging routes around the grounds. We also offer Nordic Walking classes, which is a great way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and countryside.

Local Community

  • We are committed to supporting fundraising events in the village, such as the Strawberry Fair; the Garden Party and the Village Fete, through the provision of prizes and donations.
  • We are committed to selecting one local charity a year to provide corporate support and hosting events to increase their awareness in the wider community
  • We are committed to recruiting locally (having no live-in provisions for staff), and encourage our team to use public transport and car-sharing schemes to get to and from Rockliffe Hall.
  • We have a number of team members who are with us on placement from local colleges such as Darlington, Middlesbrough & Newcastle and our Chefs have very close links with the colleges (often participating in cookery demonstrations, judging events and mentoring).

Working Practices

  • We have a policy in place to educate each of our team member on environmentally safe work practices and our Corporate Social Responsibility is discussed in each new team members induction.
  • Or team are encouraged to help contribute ideas as to how we can continue to reduce our impact on the environment.
  • We knowingly only work with where possible suppliers with ethically sound working practices.

Fundraising

Rockliffe Hall has linked with The High Tide Foundation as its nominated charity for 2018.

The High Tide Foundation brings together industry and education across Teesside to increase awareness of career opportunities, showcase the region’s industry and raise aspirations for young people in the Tees Valley. High Tide’s aim is to improve learning and employment opportunities whilst raising aspirations for young people across the region through their unique work experience and industry-led skills programmes.

Rockliffe Hall hopes to help raise thousands of pounds for The High Tide Foundation through a range of events including golf days, private dining and afternoon tea events. Members of the Rockliffe Hall team will also take part in a range fundraising initiatives including the Great North Run and the Three Peaks Challenge.

In addition, on check-out, guests will be asked if they’d like to make a voluntary £1 donation to High Tide. This alone raised nearly £5000 for Daisy Chain, Rockliffe Hall’s charity partner in 2017.

Eamonn Elliott, Chief Executive at Rockliffe Hall, says: “We’re delighted to link with The High Tide Foundation for 2018. We are inundated with requests from charities to link up with them and choosing one key charity each year helps us focus our fundraising initiatives. We chose High Tide because of the charity’s dedication to the young people of the Tees Valley. They’ve been instrumental in raising aspiration and improving awareness of career opportunities across the key business sectors on Teesside, and we hope the money we raise throughout 2018 helps the organisation continue to do its inspirational work.”

Lauren Bywater, General Manager of The Hide Tide Foundation, says: “"We are delighted to be selected as the charity of choice for Rockliffe Hall. The High Tide Foundation is built on partnerships and we very much look forward to growing our relationship with the team at Rockliffe Hall. We feel this will be a great partnership as we share a very similar passion of driving forward positive change for the young people of Teesside. Our fundraising and member events, including our annual Celebration Ball, are very important to the Foundation’s growth so we’re very excited to be working with such a prestigious partner to support and host many of our 2018 events.”
