Northern Golf Masters 2016 Results

Teesside youngster Sam Donald wins the Northern Golf Masters for the second time.

Sam Donald from Eaglescliffe Golf Club won the Northern Golf Masters at Rockliffe Hall for the second time. Top golfers from across the North East took part in the region’s biggest amateur golf tournament on Sunday 11th September. 20-year-old Sam was the comfortable winner with a score of 143 (-1) in the 36 hole competition. Richmond Golf Club’s Michael Henson was runner-up with 147.

Sam, who lives in Eaglescliffe, is thrilled to have won the competition for a second time. “I hadn’t picked up a club since the previous weekend so I wasn’t sure how I’d play. I birdied the second and eagled the third so quickly got a gut feeling that it could be a good day!”

The Northern Golf Masters returned to Rockliffe Hall for the fifth consecutive year. It is now part of the County Scratch Order of Merit which means that the top 20 County Durham competitors at this final qualifying event of the season received between 125 and five ranking points to add to their final Order of Merit total for 2016.

Forty four category one golfers from across the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria with a handicap of five or below took part. This year’s NGM entrants competed over 36 holes with golfers from across Teesside, County Durham, Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Cumbria representing their individual clubs.

Rockliffe Hall’s golf and estate director, Davy Cuthbertson, said: “This year’s NGM was another very successful event. All the players enjoyed the day, the sun shone and the wind kept everyone on their toes, but we received some fabulous feedback. Congratulations to Sam on winning the event for a second time. A huge achievement for someone so young.”

Rockliffe Hall’s golf course is famed for being one of the best in Europe and has been home to the European Tour English Senior Open twice in recent years, attracting international names and Ryder Cup stars such as Ian Woosnam, Mark James and Sam Torrance.

The NGM is an annual scratch tournament for category one golfers and adopts the format of a professional tour event with first tee announcements, on course set up and 9 and 18th hole scoreboards.
