Rockliffe Hall scoops ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ 2026 at the Destination North East England Tourism Awards

We are delighted to announce Rockliffe Hall won the coveted ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ award at the Destination North East England Tourism Awards for the fourth consecutive year.

The winners were revealed at a glittering awards ceremony held on Thursday 19th March at the Civic Centre in Newcastle.

All entrants in the tourism awards are subject to an independent judging process which includes a mystery inspection for all shortlisted hotels. Winners of the regional awards are then passed forward to the national Visit England Awards which take place later in the year.

John Marshall, Chair of Destination North East England said: “2025 was a truly landmark year for North East England. From delivering the Mercury Prize to record-breaking Women's Rugby World cup matches and a starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster, our tourism and hospitality superstars have been there every step of the way, ensuring the region firmly took its place in the spotlight. All of our finalists represent the best of the best and their commitment to delivering excellence, quality and that world-famous welcome shone through the hundreds of entries we received. We often talk about how lucky we are to call this place home, and it is safe to say, if the quality of tonight's roster of winners is anything to go by, visitors will feel privileged to experience all we have to offer too. My heartfelt congratulations to all of our finalists - there truly has never been a better time to visit North East England."

Lewis Hunter, General Manager of Rockliffe Hall added: “I am incredibly proud of the whole Rockliffe Hall team for winning this award for the fourth year in a row. The past year has seen the Old Hall undergo a period of significant refurbishment, further highlighting our dedication to provide guests with exceptional experiences. It's fantastic to see the strength of our team recognised as we approach our summer 2026 reopening.

Congratulations to all the other winners and finalists.

Investing in the Future of Rockliffe Hall

Following a multimillion-pound transformation, Rockliffe Hall, the award-winning five-star resort in the North East of England, is re-emerging as a world-class, gastronomy-focused, luxury hotel destination set to fully reopen this summer 2026.

The project, which includes the meticulous renovation of the resort’s Grade II listed building and a new extensive culinary offering led by Culinary Director James Close (previously two Michelin stars at the Raby Hunt), is focused on setting a new benchmark in contemporary luxury hospitality, shaped by exceptional craft and meaningful guest experiences.

Set within 375 acres just outside the village of Hurworth, County Durham, the resort will have 43 rooms and suites and a new collection of six distinctive dining and bar experiences including a newly built, 36-cover standalone restaurant led by James and Maria Close, an all-day dining space, a cocktail bar, the Morning Room for afternoon tea, Café TERRA, and The Clubhouse. The transformation will complement Rockliffe Hall’s already exceptional leisure offering with its award-winning 50,000-square-foot spa, gym, championship 18-hole golf course, tennis and padel courts, and bike hire.
