Tom Hartshorne wins the Club Championship 2025!

15-year-old Tom Hartshorne becomes the youngest ever winner of the Club Championship.

Over the weekend of 19th – 20th July, Rockliffe Hall hosted the annual members Club Championship, in what was a nervy looking weather forecast with thunder and lightning warnings in the run up to the weekend.

Thankfully, the Club Championship was able to go ahead as planned, with a wet forecast on the Saturday and brightening up for the Sunday.

In the field we had a few past champions all looking to have their name back on the honours board (Jackson Kneeshaw – 2011 & 2013, Julian Hayward – 2012, James Rogers – 2016, 2017 & 2021), along with a host of exciting hopeful members too.

At the end of a very wet and challenging round 1, we had a two way tie for the lead on gross 67 between three-time previous Champion James Rogers and European No.1 Under 16 golfer, Tom Hartshorne.

James had a steady round, getting himself to -6 thru 16 holes, however after a double bogey 6 on the 17th hole, he managed to recoup well with a birdie on the last for his 67. Tom also having a similar mishap, after going out in 30 (-6) and getting to -7 thru 11 holes, Tom later recorded a double bogey on the 15th, and bogey on the 16th holes, but again finishing his round with a birdie for his 67.

The final day was all set for an exciting battle between Tom and James, who both held a 5 shot lead over third place. James trying for a record fourth-time victory, and Tom playing to become our youngest ever champion.

After an early double bogey for Tom on the 2nd hole, James would take the lead after the completion of the front 9 holes, with James carding a 35 (-1) against Tom’s 36 (even) to lead by 1 shot. However the par 4, 10th hole, would prove pivotal after a birdie from Tom, James unfortunately recorded an 8 in a five shot swing for the lead.

James managed to bounce back quickly with a birdie on the 11th hole, with pars all the way in James ended with 74 for an overall score of 141 (-3). A few more birdies and bogey’s in the last 8 holes for Tom, saw him end the day with a 71, and an overall winning score of 138 (-6).

Tom’s winning weekend has come in the middle of a very busy schedule, where he entered the week after recently returning from Czech playing for the England Boys team, followed by a tie for 13th place at the English U16 (McGregor Trophy), and this week heading out to France to represent England Boys in the European Young Masters.
Tom has been a Rockliffe Hall member since the age of 4, and in his winning speech said he was ‘delighted to win the Club Championship after 11 years of trying!’.
