“Four days until the Berlin marathon and I’d like to say I’m getting a bit nervous, but I’m not – more excited than anything. The last time I went to Berlin was on a stag do so this time the experience is going to be very different!
The pressure is on, being Britain’s number 2 professional runner behind Mo Farah over half marathon distance! I need to get a time of under 2 hours and 14 minutes to qualify for the Olympics in Rio next year, but I’m feeling quite relaxed about it really.
I’ve started to wind down my training now, and will only do around 50 miles this week rather than the usual 100. I’ve spent some time in the gym at Rockliffe, and I’m carb-loading so what’s not to love!
Berlin is the flattest course in the world so a lot of competitors will be aiming for personal bests. I ran my first ever marathon, in London, this year, in 2 hours and 16 minutes, so I’m really hoping to shave at least 2 minutes off that time. That would qualify me for Rio, for now, but only the fastest 3 people will make it and the qualifying period doesn’t end until next April so who knows what could happen between now and then? I don’t plan on doing another marathon before April so it’s Berlin or bust! Runners only have a certain number of marathons in them and doing 3 in my first year competing would be one too many.
So the rest of this week I’ll be eating, resting and sleeping (sounds good doesn’t it?!) before flying out to Berlin on Friday.
The race starts at 9am (8am UK time). Then there’s a ball on the Sunday night so we can all celebrate, which I’m really looking forward to. I’ve not had a drink for 6 months!”
