Rockliffe Hall’s golf team has won two accolades at this year 59club’s Excellence awards. 59club is the market leader in providing bespoke mystery shopper performance measurements for golf, spa, leisure, events, F&B and hotel industries working with some of the best golfing venues across the globe. The winners are determined by scores collected from an independent visitor panel who evaluate the experience afforded to visiting golfers and prospective members in accordance with 59club’s non-subjective benchmarking criteria. Each venue is judged on performance in the following areas – sales, service, operations, retail, golf course, food & beverage and management.
Rockliffe Hall has retained its Gold Flag status for the third year in a row, the highest status offered. We're one of only ten venues to receive this status, with other venues including Gleneagles, The Belfry, The Grove, Monte Rei in Portugal and Yas Links in Abu Dhabi.
Our second accolade was won by our Clubhouse Restaurant Manager, Ben Hunt, for Food and Beverage Manager of the Year in the under £75 average green fee category.
While many golfers take a back seat for the winter months, here at Rockliffe Hall we have been full steam ahead creating a new structure of personnel ready for the start of the 2019 golfing season.
With the departure of our Director of Golf, Jon Stacey, who had been at Rockliffe Hall since we opened in the summer of 2009, who better to take on the role than our own Head of Instruction Martyn Stubbings? Martyn has been at Rockliffe Hall for over six years. He was previously the UK’s youngest Head Professional at Dinsdale Golf Club and has plenty of new ideas on how to progress Rockliffe Hall into the future.
With Martyn moving up, it created the space for a new Head of Instruction and we are very delighted to add Simon Robinson to the team. Simon, formerly of Sharpley Springs Golf Club, has joined Rockliffe Hall not only with seven years’ experience as a golf coach, but has also played at the highest level of the golfing stage, the European Tour.
At 18, Simon was the European and World Boys Champion playing off a handicap of -3. He participated in the 2000 winning Palmer Cup team, before turning Professional in 2004 and starting to compete on the EuroPro Tour. In his first year on the tour Simon won three times, the first player to do so! This early success graduated him to the Challenge Tour where he played for four seasons, with his most notable win in 2008 at the SK Challenge in Finland. This propelled him to the elite stage of the European Tour for both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Our former Assistant Golf Professional, Jonny Dye, has now been named as our new Golf Operations Manager. With a full Golf Concierge team to offer a meet and greet service, through to cleaning all guests' golf clubs after their round, their role is vital to maintain our excellent guest experience from arrival to departure. Jonny started as one of the service team six years ago, quickly turning to Assistant Professional alongside myself, and starting his PGA training in 2013. After becoming a fully qualified PGA professional and ready to step up to a new challenge, this role is ideally suited to Jonny, who already has his team focused on winning the Golf Operations Team of the Year award for the next year's 59lub awards.
Thankfully spring is upon us and the winter has come to a close. This means the Winter Sprinter series has now come to an end. For the second year of the series, the results and turnout were fantastic, with nearly 250 participants playing over 750 rounds of golf, the prize fund to play for was well worth it! The order of merit winner would receive an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast in one of our beautiful Old Hall Suites with a £100 voucher to spend. And for those 40 players that were fortunate to qualify for the final, they were playing for top three places, with first receiving a £300 voucher.
Thank you to all who participated and we will be hosting our third series over the 2019/20 winter period, dates to be released at the back end of the season.
Until next time, keep golfing!
