Sweet Success For Rockliffe Bees

Rockliffe Hall has only been playing host to 20,000 bees for a couple of months and they’ve been so happy in their new residence they’ve already produced their first massive crop of honey.

Rockliffe’s Head Gardener and newly qualified bee guru, Phil Mennell, has clearly been taking great care of the winged guests. They’ve produced 7.5llbs of honey which has filled 83 small jars for use around the resort.

Phil says: “When I was doing my weekly inspection I noticed the bees had started to use the end frames for honey stores, in both hives. I had a look further in the hives and couldn’t believe how much honey they’d made.”

“It’s quite unusual to get so much honey so soon, as we didn’t start off with a full colony so I wasn’t expecting to see any honey until later in the Summer. We’ve been really lucky with the lovely weather, which has encouraged them to go and find lots of pollen. The grounds and surrounding fields around Rockliffe offer perfect conditions for honey bees. I’m really pleased, and relieved, they’ve produced honey so soon because it means the bees are happy and healthy.”

Phil placed the capped frames of honey in a special extractor which spins inside a drum and draws the honey out. The bees have been really busy since Phil extracted the first crop and expects to have some more honey very soon.

He adds: “We’ve had loads of fantastic feedback so far from people who’ve tasted the honey and our head chefs are really impressed. Even some people who told me they don’t like honey tried it and loved it!”
